How the Water Well Drilling Process Works

March 8, 2023

Water well drilling is essential for providing safe, clean water to rural areas or those with a limited public supply. This process involves using specialized tools and equipment to drill and auger down into the earth, creating a well that can be tapped for water. Below are some things to help you understand the process of water well drilling.

Planning and Survey Work

The first step in the water well drilling process involves planning, surveying, and assessing the site. A geologist will take samples and analyze the soil to determine what type of ground is being drilled and how hard the land is below. According to the Environment Protection Agency, it's estimated that more than 13 million households rely on private wells to have healthy drinking water. Before drilling into a residential site, it's vital to complete all the necessary survey work to make sure that everything goes according to plan and that the water produced is safe for use.

Drilling and Sampling Techniques

Once the preliminary work is complete, it's time to begin drilling. Depending on the size of the proposed well and its intended purpose, different drill bits and sampling techniques may be used. The most common type of well involves a rotary drill bit which spins rapidly while being forced down into the ground. As this happens, debris is scooped up from below and removed from the borehole in order to keep it clear for further drilling.

Installing a Pump System

The next step in the water well drilling process is to install a pump system. This system helps to bring the clean, filtered water up from deep within the well and into your home or business. These pumps are usually connected to an underground storage tank which controls flow rates and provides pressure when needed. The quality of the water must be tested after installation of the pump system in order to ensure that it meets all safety standards.

Casing and Sealing

The last step in the process is casing and sealing. Casing is used to line the inside walls of the well in order to prevent contaminants from entering the groundwater. It also serves as a structural support for the walls of the well. Sealing is then used on the outside of the casing in order to prevent any potential contaminants from seeping into the water supply.
